increase the availability of droma, a highly esteemed
root food that when mixed with barley creates a complete protein.

two traditional Tibetan doctors are studying 600 Tibetan children
to test the efficacy of traditional herbal supplements in preventing
the two major causes of childhood death: respiratory illness

Prenatal and Postnatal CareAnecdotal accounts indicate
that maternal mortality is rising. The Terma Foundation has
a pilot program to train birth attendants in several villages,
and provide at-risk women with prenatal vitamins and nutrition
education. |

Health Education and Primary Care
DeliveryThe Terma Foundation helps train and equip
village doctors (distributing more that $2,000,000 in donated
medical supplies so far). To increase health awareness in a
culturally appropriate way for a largely illiterate population,
the Foundation is also in the process of developing posters,
and even popular songs, to reinforce basic health messages regarding
sanitation, hygiene, and nutrition. |

Tuberculosis Prevention and ControlTuberculosisincluding
cases of fatal, multidrug-resistant varietiesis on the
rise in Tibet, far outstripping the capabilities of the local
health care systems. The Terma Foundation is running a five-year
pilot program in Chamdo Prefecture to provide training and supplies
needed to support a successful TB eradication program.
